Historic Change at Chester

The Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (IPHE) held its Annual Conference in Chester on 2nd – 5th July. At the AGM, for the first time in the Institute’s long history, two independent candidates were ratified to join the Board of Trustees. Ian Pearson (age 51) will become the chairman of the Board for two years and Sandra Raine (age 47) will act as an independent Board member for three Years.

Ian Pearson holds a degree in English from Exeter University and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Westminster College, Oxford. Ian has a wealth of experience to offer which includes teaching in adult education, colleges of further education and in higher education. He has served as Chief Executive of a number of Professional Institutes and has been a member of several national steering groups for skills and careers training.

Sandra Raine BA (hons), ACIS is Executive Director of The International Headache Society a small charity that through its membership of neurologists and academics researches and educates on migraine and other types of headache. She has worked for a wide range of charitable, private and governmental organisations. As a Chartered Secretary, who has specialised in integrating new governance arrangements and change management, she will help IPHE in its early stages of settling down its new structure and will bring a fresh perspective to the Board of Trustees.

Mayor praises Institute

The Lord Mayor of Chester played host to delegates attending the Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering’s (IPHE) Annual Conference, at a Civic Reception held at Chester Town Hall on Thursday 2nd June.

Councillor Mike Jones and his wife Suzanne warmly welcomed the delegates and their families, some of whom had travelled great distances to be there. In a speech that acknowledged the important work carried out by the Institute, he said that he held the IPHE in high regard and praised the professionalism of its members. He went on to say that he was pleased that the Institute, which celebrates its centenary in 2006, chose Chester as the venue for its Annual Conference.

On Friday morning the Mayor officially opened the IPHE Conference, which was held at the Chester Moat House. On Saturday evening Councillor Jones and his wife were special guests of the IPHE at the Gala Dinner. The Conference attracted over 250 delegates, partners, children and exhibitors and finished on Sunday 5th June.

Simply the best

Held in Chester from 2nd to 5th June, the Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering’s (IPHE) Conference attracted over 250 delegates, families and exhibitors. The Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Mike Jones, welcomed everyone to a civic reception on Thursday evening at the Town Hall. He officially opened the Conference at the Chester Moat House on Friday morning.

The first speaker, Scott Berry from Applecore Designs gave an interesting Presentation on 3D Design Graphics. Peter Adkins from Putsmans Solicitors followed and explained about the Business and Legal CD that will shortly be launched by Plumbing Promotions Limited in support of the Institute’s work as a professional body and educational charity. Effective Corrosion and Scale Prevention was the topic of Dr Carl Jasper, Aquademic Limited and to round off the morning Dr Lynne Jack, representing Heriot-Watt University, referred to the SARS outbreak in the Amoy Gardens housing complex in Hong Kong to illustrate her talk on Air-borne Cross Contamination Routes in Drainage Systems.

The AGM took place after lunch and Tony Brunton IEng LCGI FIOP RP was elected as the new National President. Peter Ashby AIPHE RP is now Vice-President. In a postal ballot Corporate members (FIPHE, MIPHE and AIPHE) ratified two independent members of the Board of Trustees – Ian Pearson, who will serve as chairman for two years and Sandra Raine who will serve for three years.

On Saturday there was a good mix of technical presentations throughout the day including information on Part G, L and P of the Building Regulations. Current educational issues were discussed, along with training. The new President, Tony Brunton, closed the conference and thanked the Stewards, led by Tony Walters; Conference Chairmen Alan Woollaston and Geoff Marsh; the Head Office team and sponsors for all their help. The event finished with the traditional Gala Dinner.

Social events were also included in the programme for delegates and their families, including a Fun Night at Chester Races. Many delegates thought that this was the best IPHE Conference so far, but said they were looking forward to the special Centenary Conference to be held in Torquay in 2006. Operations Director Kevin Wellman said: “A number of people have already reserved places for next year’s Conference and we are receiving international enquiries about the event. This will certainly be the highlight of the Institute’s centenary year.”
